A minimal example for setting up a thermal modulus computation

This tutorial provides a quick overview of how to set up a minimal project for a thermal modulus computation. It is not intended to cover a specific casting process in any detail, nor does it deal with the construction of a casting and feeding system. It aims to familiarize the user with the most basic steps involved to build a simple layout from imported geometry in order to compute a thermal modulus solution over its domain.

Start a new project

Press the New button to begin a new project.

Assign Materials to Default Domains

Open the Domains panel.

Click the label of a Domain to open its inspector dialog on the right.

Press the Select button on the Material entry to open the selector dialog for Material assignment.

Choose the desired Material from the available options and confirm with the Ok button.

Both the Default Molding Domain [blue] and the Default Casting Domain [red] require an assigned Material.

Import Model Geometry

Open the Models panel.

Click the Import button to show the Open File Dialog.

Select the files to be imported and confirm the choice by pressing the Open button.

When the import task is finished, Models of the imported geometry will appear in the model list.

Instantiate the Models in the Layout

Select the models to designate them for instantiation in the Layout.

Instantiate the selected Models by pressing the Instantiate button. This will open the Layout Editor panel.

The Layout Editor panel will display Origin entries for every instantiated Model.

Specify the Instance Types of the instantiated Models

Select an Origin to designate it for Instance type assignment. After instantiating a Model its corresponding Origin may already be selected.

Select the Instances entry in the Layout toolbar.

Choose the Instance type that is to be assigned to the selected Origins by clicking its glyph.

After assigning the chosen Instance type, the selected Origins will display its glyph and the color of the associated Domain.

All Origins need to be assigned an Instance type to proceed.

Specify the mold bounds

Open the Basic Settings panel.

Press the Update Dimensions button to fit the mold bounds to the instantiated geometry.

Update the design discretization

Open the Discretization panel.

Choose a resolution preset.

Press the Update button to update the Design discretization.

Start the modulus computation

Open the Analysis menu.

Click the label text of the Thermal Modulus solution to open its inspector dialog on the right.

Set Phase Transition to Sigmoid.

Press the Update button to start the modulus computation.

When the computation task is finished, the modulus field will be displayed projected on the model geometry.
